A hand-painted rug is a vintage rug given a second life: the classic pattern stays, but the color is brand new, placed by hand one area at a time.

What is a hand-painted rug?

A hand-painted rug starts as a vintage, hand-knotted wool rug, often with a traditional Persian design. Its original colors are softened, its pile is cut low, and then new color is painted into the wool by hand. The finished rug keeps the structure and drawing of the old one, but the palette can be anything: teal and brown, gray and purple, soft blue and tan.

The appeal is simple. You get the depth and history of a vintage hand-knotted rug in colors that suit a modern room, and no two pieces come out the same.

How a hand-painted rug is made

  1. A vintage hand-knotted wool rug is chosen for its design and the condition of its wool.
  2. It is laid in the sun to soften the original colors so the new ones can take over.
  3. The pile is sheared low by hand, which sharpens the pattern and gives the surface a smooth, flat feel.
  4. New color is painted in by hand, area by area, following the lines of the old design or changing them on purpose.
  5. The rug is washed to set the color and soften the wool.

Hand-painted vs overdyed rugs

Both styles give old rugs new color, but they get there differently:

  • Overdyed rugs are faded and then dyed in a single color, so the whole rug takes on one shade, such as blue, pink or gray, with the old pattern showing through as a darker tone. See our Color Reform and overdyed rugs guide.
  • Hand-painted rugs get their color by hand, area by area, so one rug can carry several new colors and the pattern reads in more than one shade.

If you want a calm, single-color rug, choose an overdyed rug. If you want a classic pattern in a fresh, multi-color palette, choose a hand-painted one.

Where a hand-painted rug works best

These rugs shine in eclectic, boho, modern and mid-century rooms, where a traditional pattern in unexpected color becomes the focal point. The low pile lies flat under coffee tables and dining chairs, and it suits living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Pull one of the rug's colors into pillows or art to tie the room together; our rug and sofa color guide has ideas.

Caring for a hand-painted rug

Vacuum gently without the beater bar and rotate the rug every six months. Blot spills right away and never scrub, so the color stays even. For a deep clean, use a professional who knows hand-knotted wool, and limit long hours of strong direct sun. Read more in our care guide.
