Arsh's Rugs is based in Carlstadt, New Jersey. As a New Jersey business, we are required by law to collect New Jersey state sales tax on any order shipped or delivered to an address within the state.
The current New Jersey state sales tax rate is 6.625%, applied to the order subtotal. New Jersey does not impose additional county or municipal sales taxes, so the same rate applies regardless of which town or city your rug ships to.
This applies to all in-state purchases — online orders, phone orders, in-showroom purchases, and rug rentals shipped or delivered within New Jersey.
The rate shown reflects the New Jersey state sales tax rate as of the last update to this page. Sales tax rates are set by the New Jersey Division of Taxation and may change over time. The rate applied at checkout is always the rate in effect on the date of purchase.
Orders shipping to addresses outside of New Jersey are not charged New Jersey sales tax at checkout. This includes all 47 other continental U.S. states we serve.
Please be aware that your home state may impose a "use tax" obligation on items purchased from out-of-state retailers. Use tax is generally the buyer's responsibility, not the seller's. We do not collect use tax on behalf of other states and do not file tax returns in states where we are not required to.
If you have questions about your own state's use tax rules, we'd encourage you to consult your state's department of revenue or a qualified tax professional. We're a rug gallery, not a tax authority.
Certain customers may purchase rugs without sales tax in New Jersey, provided we receive a valid exemption certificate before the order is placed. Once an order is processed with tax, we are generally unable to refund the tax retroactively.
Interior designers, retailers, stagers, and other businesses buying for resale or trade may qualify for exemption by submitting:
Submit your certificate to Info@Arshs.com before your purchase. Once verified, we'll create a tax-exempt account for future orders so you don't have to resend the documentation each time.
Qualifying government entities and 501(c)(3) nonprofits with valid New Jersey exemption certificates may also purchase tax-exempt. Contact us for guidance on the specific documentation required.
Exemption certificates are reviewed for validity. If a certificate is later found to be invalid or expired, the buyer is responsible for any tax owed. We recommend confirming your certificate status with the New Jersey Division of Taxation if you're unsure.
For New Jersey orders, sales tax is calculated on the order subtotal — the cost of the rugs and any taxable services or accessories. It is applied automatically by our checkout system based on your shipping address.
The line items shown on your invoice will look like this:
Promotional discounts and store credit are applied before tax is calculated. If you apply a discount code at checkout, the tax is calculated on the discounted subtotal, not the original price.
Sales tax may also apply to our service offerings when performed for New Jersey clients:
If you're a designer, stager, or business client using our services for resale or trade, the same exemption rules above apply — submit a valid certificate before service begins.
This page describes our standard sales tax practices and is provided for general informational purposes. It is not tax advice. Tax laws and rates change, and your specific situation may differ from the general cases described above.
For authoritative information on New Jersey sales tax, refer to the New Jersey Division of Taxation. For advice specific to your situation, please consult a qualified tax professional or CPA.
Because your order is shipping to a New Jersey address, and we are required by law to collect 6.625% New Jersey state sales tax on in-state orders. The tax is itemized as a separate line on your receipt.
We only collect sales tax in New Jersey, where our business is physically based. Your home state may have a use tax that applies to out-of-state purchases — that obligation is between you and your state's department of revenue.
Yes, if you're buying for resale to a client, you can submit a valid resale or exemption certificate. For New Jersey designers, that's Form ST-3. For out-of-state designers, your home state's resale certificate or a Streamlined Sales Tax Certificate of Exemption works. Email it to Info@Arshs.com before placing your order.
Generally no, once an order is processed and tax has been remitted to the state, we can't refund it retroactively. The cleanest path is to send your exemption certificate before the order is placed. Contact us right away if you've just ordered and have a valid certificate — we'll do what we can.
We offer free shipping on orders within the continental United States, so this generally isn't a line item on your invoice. If you do see a shipping or handling charge on a custom order, the taxability of that charge depends on its specific nature — contact us if you have questions on a particular invoice.
For orders shipping outside the United States, we do not collect U.S. sales tax. However, your country may impose import duties, VAT, or customs fees that are the responsibility of the recipient. These are separate from our pricing and not collected by Arsh's at checkout.
Rental fees for rugs delivered within New Jersey are generally taxable. Rentals delivered to NYC, Pennsylvania, or other out-of-state locations are not subject to New Jersey sales tax. Trade and production accounts with valid exemption certificates can rent tax-exempt the same way they can purchase tax-exempt.
Email Info@Arshs.com as soon as you realize, and include your certificate. If we haven't processed the order yet, we can adjust it. If it's already been processed, contact us right away and we'll see what options are available.
