The sofa is usually the biggest piece of color in a living room, so it's the best place to start when choosing a rug. Here are combinations that work every time.
By sofa color
Gray sofa: rust, terracotta, brick red and navy add warmth. A red Kazak or a rust Moroccan rug looks great against cool gray.
Beige or cream sofa: navy, deep blue and rich red give contrast; an ivory or tone-on-tone rug creates a calm, layered look.
White sofa: almost anything works. This is the place for a bold color or a strong pattern.
Navy sofa: ivory, gold, rust and soft gray. A warm Oushak is a natural partner.
Green sofa: rust, gold, pink and ivory. Traditional reds also work, as on a classic library sofa.
Brown or cognac leather: deep reds, blues and tribal geometrics, like a Khal Mohammadi or Kazak.
Black sofa: ivory, gray and red keep the room from feeling heavy.
Echo the sofa color for a bold look, or go soft and tonal for a calm one.
Simple rules that always work
Pull from the pillows. Pick one accent color from your cushions or art and find it in the rug's border or motifs.
Contrast or match, on purpose. A rug darker or lighter than the sofa makes both stand out; a rug in the same tone creates a quiet, tailored look.
Balance the pattern. A plain sofa can take a busy rug. A patterned sofa wants a calmer rug.
Think about the floor, too. The rug sits between the sofa and the floor, so it should work with both. See our hardwood floor guide and room color guide.
