Two hidden details decide how a handmade rug looks, feels and lasts: how the wool was spun, and what the rug is built on.

Hand-spun vs machine-spun wool

Hand-spun wool is twisted into yarn by hand, so its thickness varies slightly along its length. It takes dye a little unevenly, which creates the gentle shifts of shade called abrash, and it keeps more of its natural lanolin and luster. The result is a rug with depth, softness and a natural glow.

Machine-spun wool is perfectly even. It gives very uniform color and a crisp, regular look, and it usually costs less. It is a good choice for modern designs that want flat, consistent color.

How to tell them apart

  • Look at a large area of one color. Faint bands of lighter and darker shade suggest hand-spun wool.
  • Feel the pile. Hand-spun wool often feels softer and more lively.
  • Check the listing. We say which wool each rug uses, such as the hand-spun blends in our Ziegler and Peshawar rugs.

The foundation: cotton, wool or silk

The foundation is the grid of warp and weft threads the knots are tied onto. You can see it in the fringe, which is the end of the warp.

  • Cotton: the most common. Strong and stable, it helps a rug lie flat with straight sides.
  • Wool: traditional in tribal and village rugs. Flexible and durable, though a wool foundation can make a rug a little less perfectly square.
  • Silk: used in the finest rugs. It allows very high knot counts and detailed designs, and costs more. See knot density.
