A soft trellis holding small blossoms covers a gray-green field inside a beige floral border. The small repeat reads as texture from a distance and as pattern up close. It is an oriental transitional 8x10 area rug in green and beige.
Hand knotted and one of a kind, this wool rug is made from hand-spun, natural vegetable dyed wool, a blend of merino, New Zealand, and Ghazni wool. The green of the field and the beige of the border come from vegetable dyes extracted from local plants, and khaki and mustard pick out the smaller motifs. You may notice an abrash in the green field, a soft shift in shade within a single color. It comes from hand-spun wool taking natural dye slightly differently from batch to batch, and it is one of the signs of a true handmade rug. The trellis is knotted by eye, so each repeat is very slightly different from the next. After knotting, the pile is trimmed to a moderate thickness, then stone-washed and sun-dried, which gives this 8x10 rug its natural sheen. What you get is a dense wool pile with a soft hand, low enough to sit neatly under chairs and doors and sturdy enough for busy rooms. Because the pile lies in one direction, the green field looks a little deeper from one end of the rug and lighter from the other.
It anchors a living room seating group, a bedroom, or a dining room. The cool green and beige palette, with touches of khaki and mustard, suits coastal, Scandinavian, and contemporary rooms, where it reads as a calm accent. The fine lattice reads as tailored, which suits transitional and classic-modern rooms.
