A tight trellis of pale blossoms covers a dark brown field inside a beige floral border. The small repeat reads as texture from a distance and as pattern up close. This bohemian transitional 6x9 area rug comes in brown and beige.
This handmade wool rug is one of a kind, hand knotted from hand-spun, natural vegetable dyed wool in a mix of merino, New Zealand, and Ghazni wool. The vegetable dyes, extracted from local plants, give the brown field and the beige border their depth, with red and tan used for the detail work. The brown field may show an abrash, a gentle change of shade within one color. It is normal in handmade rugs, because hand-spun wool takes natural dye a little differently from batch to batch. The trellis is knotted by eye, so each repeat is very slightly different from the next. After knotting, the pile is trimmed to a moderate thickness, then stone-washed and sun-dried, which gives this 6x9 rug its natural sheen. The finished pile is dense and even, soft to walk on, and resilient enough to recover from furniture and daily use. Because the pile lies in one direction, the brown field looks a little deeper from one end of the rug and lighter from the other.
It anchors a living room seating group, a bedroom, or a dining room. The warm brown and beige palette, with touches of red and tan, brings a boho chic, eclectic feel to a room and pairs well with leather, walnut, and brass. The small-scale pattern layers well with bolder fabrics and prints.
