A honeycomb trellis filled with flower sprays covers a blue field inside a tan key-pattern border. The small repeat reads as texture from a distance and as pattern up close. This oriental transitional 8x10 area rug comes in blue and tan.
This handmade wool rug is one of a kind, hand knotted from hand-spun, natural vegetable dyed wool in a mix of merino, New Zealand, and Ghazni wool. The vegetable dyes, extracted from local plants, give the blue field and the tan border their depth, with light blue and pink used for the detail work. The blue field may show an abrash, a gentle change of shade within one color. It is normal in handmade rugs, because hand-spun wool takes natural dye a little differently from batch to batch. The trellis is knotted by eye, so each repeat is very slightly different from the next. Once the 8x10 rug is off the loom, the pile is trimmed to a moderate thickness, then stone-washed and sun-dried for a natural sheen. The finished pile is dense and even, soft to walk on, and resilient enough to recover from furniture and daily use. The natural lanolin in the wool helps the pile shed dust and resist everyday soiling, so it stays fresh with regular vacuuming.
It anchors a living room seating group, a bedroom, or a dining room. In blue and tan, with touches of light blue and pink, this rug gives a boho chic or eclectic room a focal point, and it sits just as well in a coastal or transitional space. The small-scale pattern layers well with bolder fabrics and prints.
