Blossoms and small panels of pattern are scattered across a green field inside a tan floral border. The pattern runs across the whole field, so it looks balanced from any angle. It is an eclectic transitional 10x14 area rug in green and tan.
This handmade wool rug is one of a kind, hand knotted from hand-spun, natural vegetable dyed wool in a mix of merino, New Zealand, and Ghazni wool. The vegetable dyes, extracted from local plants, give the green field and the tan border their depth, with brown used for the detail work. The green field may show an abrash, a gentle change of shade within one color. It is normal in handmade rugs, because hand-spun wool takes natural dye a little differently from batch to batch. Fine hand knotting keeps the small blossoms and curving vines crisp. After knotting, the pile is trimmed to a moderate thickness, then stone-washed and sun-dried, which gives this 10x14 rug its natural sheen. The finished pile is dense and even, soft to walk on, and resilient enough to recover from furniture and daily use. Because the pile lies in one direction, the green field looks a little deeper from one end of the rug and lighter from the other.
It holds a full living room seating group, a dining table for six to eight, or a spacious primary bedroom. The cool green and tan palette, with a touch of brown, suits coastal, Scandinavian, and contemporary rooms, where it reads as a calm accent. The floral pattern leans transitional and suits cottage and grandmillennial rooms too.
