In a small room, the right rug makes the space feel bigger and more put together. The surprise is that the right rug is often larger than you expect.

Go bigger than you think

A tiny rug in a small living room breaks the floor into pieces and makes the room feel cramped. One rug that reaches under the front legs of the sofa and chairs pulls everything together and makes the floor read as one calm surface. In many small living rooms a 5x8 or 6x9 looks better than a 4x6.

The most useful small sizes

  • 2x3: in front of a sink, a door or a pet's bowl.
  • 3x5: beside a bed, in a small entry, or under a console table.
  • 4x6: a reading corner, a home office chair or a small bedroom.
  • Runners: a long, narrow rug stretches a hallway or galley kitchen and makes it feel longer.

Tricks that make a room feel larger

  • Light grounds such as ivory, beige and soft blue reflect light and open the room up.
  • An all-over pattern is calmer than a big central medallion that gets hidden by furniture.
  • Run the rug the long way in a rectangular room to draw the eye down its length.
  • Leave a border of floor of at least 8 to 12 inches so the room doesn't look wall-to-wall.

Keep small rugs in place

Small rugs slide and curl more than big ones. A thin non-slip pad keeps them flat and safe, especially on tile and polished wood.
