Practical Guide · Rug Care
The unsexy but important layer nobody thinks about until something goes wrong. Types, sizing, floor compatibility, and the rug pad mistakes that damage floors and shorten rug lifespans.

Almost every hand-knotted rug that comes into our cleaning facility with premature wear has the same underlying cause: no rug pad, or the wrong one. The rug pad is the least glamorous purchase in your entire rug setup, and it might be the most impactful. Here's what to know.
Best for: cushioning, thick rugs that don't need extra grip, layered setups. Very safe on all floors. Doesn't provide non-slip. Cost: $1-3/sq ft.
Best for: preventing slippage on hardwood and tile, thin rugs and flatweaves. Choose natural rubber, not synthetic. Cost: $1.50-4/sq ft.
Best for: most people, most rugs, most floors. Felt cushioning on top, rubber non-slip on bottom. The universal answer if you're not sure. Cost: $2-6/sq ft.
Two more categories to know exist but avoid:
Avoid these
PVC pads (usually sold as "non-slip mesh" or "grippy pad" at big-box stores) contain plasticizers that break down over time and leave yellow or brown stains on hardwood floors. The damage is often permanent. Same for polyurethane foam pads.
Cheap foam pads compress quickly, lose their cushioning, and often disintegrate within a year. They also trap moisture against the floor.
If a rug pad costs $10 for an 8×10 area, it's one of these. Spend the $50-150 for real felt or felt-rubber combo. Your floors will last decades longer.
Rug pads should be sized to one inch smaller than the rug on all sides. So an 8×10 rug gets a 7'10"×9'10" pad (or the closest standard size — usually 7'10"×9'10" or 8'×10' cut down).
Why smaller: if the pad extends to the exact edge of the rug or slightly past, the pad edge shows and looks ugly. It also creates a hard edge that the rug can catch on and roll over.
Why not much smaller: if the pad is more than 2 inches shorter than the rug on any side, the unsupported rug edges wear faster and are more likely to curl.
Most rug pads come in standard sizes and can be cut with regular household scissors. Cutting is expected — buy the next size up and trim to fit.
The most damaging thing you can do to a hardwood floor isn't spilling wine or dropping a heavy object. It's leaving a cheap PVC rug pad down for a decade.
Look for pads with a moisture barrier — a waterproof layer between the top and bottom of the pad that prevents accidents from soaking through to the floor. Some brands market these specifically as "pet-friendly." Also relevant if you have young kids.
Go thicker. A 1/4" or 3/8" felt-rubber combo distributes weight better than a 1/8" pad and significantly extends rug life in hallways, entries, and living room traffic paths.
Choose a pad with a moisture barrier to prevent condensation from below damaging the rug. Concrete floors slowly release moisture even when sealed.
Two pads. Standard felt-rubber combo between base rug and floor; thin non-slip mesh or double-sided rug tape between the two rugs. See our layering guide.
Rug pads come in thicknesses from about 1/8" to 1/2". Most people should use 1/4" — the sweet spot for cushioning without adding awkward height.
A quality rug pad should last 8-15 years, roughly the lifespan of one professional cleaning cycle. Signs yours needs replacement:
When you send a rug for professional cleaning, replace or wash the pad at the same time. Cleaning the rug and putting it back on a decayed pad is a waste of the cleaning.
Buy a 1/4" felt-rubber combo pad, natural rubber (not synthetic or PVC), sized one inch smaller than your rug on all sides. Expect to spend $50-200 depending on rug size. It will last a decade. It will protect both the rug and the floor. This single decision is the least glamorous and most impactful thing you'll do for the longevity of your rug collection.
