In a child's room, the rug is where the playing happens: tummy time, block towers, story time on the floor. It needs to be soft, safe and easy to live with.

Why wool works for children's rooms

Wool is soft and warm to sit on, and its natural lanolin slows spills from soaking in, which buys you time to blot. Wool is also naturally flame-resistant and springs back after being stepped on. A well-made wool rug can move from the nursery to a teenager's room and still look good.

Pile height

  • Medium or plush pile: the softest landing for crawling and play. Our Moroccan-style rugs are thick and cozy.
  • Low pile: easier for toy cars, blocks and little walkers who are still finding their balance.
  • Flat weave: a kilim is light, easy to shake out and easy to move when it needs cleaning.

Colors and patterns that forgive

An all-over pattern in medium tones hides juice, crayon and everyday marks far better than a pale, plain rug. Pick one color from the bedding or walls so the rug ties the room together, and choose a design that won't feel babyish in a few years.

Size and placement

Size the rug to the play area rather than the whole room. A 5x8 or 6x9 in front of the bed or the toy shelves gives children a defined spot to play. Keep the crib and changing table on a flat, stable surface.

Safety and care

Always use a non-slip rug pad so the rug can't slide under running feet. Blot spills right away with cold water, vacuum often, and have the rug professionally washed when it needs a deep clean.
