Arsh's Rug Library · Rug Styles

Most handmade rugs follow one of two layouts: a central medallion, or a pattern that repeats across the whole field. Knowing which suits your room makes choosing much easier.
A medallion rug is built around one large central motif, often with matching corner pieces and a strong border. The layout is symmetrical and formal, and it draws the eye to the middle of the room.
An all-over rug repeats its motifs across the whole field with no single center. Bokhara guls, Kazak and Mamluk geometrics, and many floral designs are all-over patterns.
