A rug turns a desk in a spare room into a proper office. It quiets the room for calls, softens the floor under your feet, and gives the space a look you enjoy sitting in all day.

Size the rug around the desk

Your chair should stay on the rug even when you push back from the desk. Measure the desk, then add 24 to 36 inches behind it for the chair to roll. For a typical desk that means a 5x8 or 6x9. If the office also has a reading chair or sofa, a larger rug can hold both zones, or use a second smaller rug for the seating area.

Rolling chairs

  • Choose low pile or flat weave. Casters roll easily over a dense, low-pile hand-knotted rug or a kilim, and dig into deep pile.
  • Use a firm, thin pad. A dense felt rug pad keeps the rug from creeping under the chair.
  • Rotate the rug every few months so the chair path doesn't wear in one spot.

Quieter calls

Hard floors bounce sound around a room. A wool rug with a pad soaks up echo and footsteps, so you sound clearer on video calls. Our sound guide explains why.

Colors for focus

Deep greens, blues and charcoal feel calm and studious; warm reds and rust feel energetic and traditional, like a library. Keep the pattern quieter if your desk is busy, and bolder if the room is plain.
