Hallways and stairs get more foot traffic per square foot than any other part of the home. A good runner protects the floor, quiets footsteps and makes a long, narrow space feel finished.
Common runner sizes are around 2.5x8, 2.5x10 and 3x10, and every listing in our runner collection shows the exact size.

A stair runner usually covers the center of each tread with 3 to 4 inches of wood showing on each side. Stairs need the runner fixed firmly with rods or by an installer, so tell us the number of steps, the tread depth and the riser height and we'll help you work out the length.
Hand-knotted wool is the best fiber for halls: it springs back under foot traffic and hides everyday dirt. An all-over or geometric pattern hides wear better than a plain field. Flat-woven kilim runners lie flat, so they work well in kitchens and in halls with doors that open over them. Kazak and tribal runners are especially forgiving in busy homes.
Always use a rug pad cut slightly smaller than the runner. It stops slipping, which matters on stairs and polished floors, and adds cushion that extends the runner's life. Rotate the runner end to end every few months so the wear spreads evenly.
