A dining rug has one job most rugs don't: chairs slide back and forth over it every day. If the rug is too small, the back chair legs catch on the edge every time someone stands up. The fix is simple once you know the rule.
Measure your table, then add 24 inches on every side. That gives room to pull a chair out and sit down without the back legs leaving the rug. If your room is tight, 18 inches is the minimum that still works.

Low to medium pile is easiest, because chairs glide instead of digging in. A hand-knotted wool rug is a good choice: wool resists spills and releases dirt when vacuumed. Flat-woven kilim rugs are the easiest of all for chairs and cleaning. An all-over pattern hides crumbs and small stains better than a plain field or a single central medallion.
Follow the table, not the room. A long rectangular table wants a rectangular rug; a round or square table wants a round or square rug. Leave at least 8 to 12 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls so the room doesn't look crowded.
Put a non-slip rug pad underneath to stop the rug creeping as chairs move, and rotate the rug every six months so the wear spreads evenly. For spills, blot right away and never rub; our cleaning mistakes guide explains why.
Browse 8x10 rugs and 9x12 rugs for most dining rooms, or send us your table size at info@arshs.com and we'll suggest rugs that fit.
