An ivory octagonal medallion sits on a field of charcoal and gray stars and leafy motifs, inside a dark gray border. The medallion gives the room a natural focal point, and the layered geometry rewards a closer look. This 12x15 Mamluk area rug comes in gray and black.
In the late 1400s, Cairo was home to some of the most admired carpet workshops in the world, and the Mamluk style was born there. Instead of flowing florals, the Mamluk look relies on crisp geometry: octagons, stars and small repeating shapes set in careful balance. At almost 12 by 15 feet, this is one of the largest rugs in the collection, with an ivory octagonal medallion set in a field of charcoal and gray stars. It was hand knotted in Afghanistan from New Zealand wool with natural dyes, and the wool's natural shine keeps the gray tones from looking flat. The dark gray border gives the whole room-size rug a strong, tailored outline. Beyond its shine, the New Zealand wool is strong and resilient, so the rug keeps its look for years. You may notice an abrash across the field, a gentle shift in shade within a single color that comes from natural dye taking a little differently from batch to batch. The pile is dense and even, and it stands up well to daily use.
It is made for a great room, a formal living room, or a dining room with a table that seats ten or more. The soft gray and black palette suits transitional, modern farmhouse, and classic traditional rooms, where the pattern adds interest without overwhelming the space. It blends centuries-old tradition with a look that works in a modern home.
