Machine-washable rugs are everywhere right now, and for some spots they make sense. Here is a straight comparison with hand-knotted wool, so you can choose the right rug for each room.

What a washable rug is

Most washable rugs are thin, machine-made rugs with a printed design on a synthetic surface, often polyester, sometimes with a separate grippy backing. They are sized to fit a large home washing machine, so they usually top out around 8x10 or smaller.

Side by side

  • Look: a washable rug's design is printed on the surface. A hand-knotted rug's design is built knot by knot, so it shows on the back too and has depth and gentle color shifts.
  • Feel: washable rugs are thin and flat. Hand-knotted wool is thicker, springier and warmer underfoot.
  • Spills: a washable rug goes in the machine. Wool resists liquid for a short time thanks to its natural lanolin, so most spills blot out, and a professional wash handles the rest.
  • Lifespan: washable rugs tend to wear, fade and fray within a few years of regular washing. A well-made hand-knotted rug lasts for decades and can be repaired.
  • Cost: washable rugs cost much less up front. Hand-knotted rugs cost more but often less per year of use. See why.

Which one for which room

A washable rug can be a practical choice for a mudroom, a laundry room or under a toddler's high chair, where it will be washed often and replaced anyway. For living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and entries, a hand-knotted wool rug looks better, feels better and lasts far longer.

The easy-care middle ground

If cleaning is your main worry, look at flat-woven wool kilims: they are light, easy to shake out and simple to wash professionally. Busy patterns in medium colors also hide everyday marks between cleanings.
