People use the words rug and carpet loosely, but in a home they usually mean two different things. Here is the difference, and how to decide between them.

The short answer

  • Carpet is installed wall to wall, usually tacked down over padding and sold by the square foot from a roll.
  • An area rug is a finished piece with its own edges that sits on top of the floor. You can move it, clean it, rotate it and take it with you.

Why fine rugs are called carpets

In the rug trade and in museums, large handmade rugs are often called carpets: Persian carpets, Mamluk carpets, palace carpets. Traditionally, "carpet" meant a large floor covering and "rug" a smaller one. Both describe the same handmade object, not wall-to-wall flooring.

Area rug or carpet?

  • Cleaning: carpet is cleaned in place. A rug can be taken out and washed by hand properly.
  • Lifespan: wall-to-wall carpet is usually replaced every several years. A hand-knotted wool rug lasts for decades.
  • Flexibility: a rug moves to a new room or a new home with you, and you can rotate it to even out wear.
  • Floors: a rug shows off the wood or stone around it; carpet hides the floor completely.
  • Comfort: carpet covers every inch, which some people like in bedrooms and playrooms.

The best of both

For most homes, a large area rug over a hard floor gives you the softness of carpet where you sit and walk, with a beautiful floor showing around the edges. See our large rug guide for sizing a room-sized rug.
