Redecorating, downsizing or settling an estate often leaves a rug you no longer need. Before you roll it to the curb, find out what you have. It may be worth more than you think.

Step 1: Find out what it is

Turn it over. If the design is just as clear on the back and the fringe is part of the rug rather than sewn on, it is probably hand-knotted, and worth a closer look. Our handmade checklist explains each test. For value, see what's my rug worth? and send us photos for a free read.

Step 2: Clean and repair first

A clean rug with tidy edges is easier to sell, donate or reuse, and is worth more. Our hand-washing service and repair team can restore fringe, edges and worn spots. Our repair or replace guide helps you decide whether it's worth it.

Step 3: Choose what to do with it

  • Sell it: local rug dealers, consignment shops and online marketplaces work for most handmade rugs. Fine or rare pieces may suit an auction house. Good photos and accurate measurements make a big difference.
  • Donate it: charities and thrift stores often accept clean rugs. If you plan to claim a tax deduction, ask your tax advisor what documentation you need; valuable rugs may require a written appraisal.
  • Give it a new life: a rug that no longer fits the living room might be perfect in a bedroom, office or entry. Hand-knotted rugs can also hang on a wall; see how to hang a rug.
  • Pass it on: many families keep a good rug as an heirloom. If you've inherited one, read what to do next.
