Arsh's Rug Library · Room Guides

In a bedroom, the rug is the first thing your feet touch in the morning. The goal is soft floor on both sides of the bed, with the rug sized to the bed rather than the room.
Under two-thirds of the bed. Slide the rug under the bed so it starts just in front of the nightstands and extends past the foot of the bed. This is the most common layout and leaves the nightstands on bare floor.
Under the whole bed. A larger rug that holds the bed and the nightstands makes a big room feel grounded. Leave 12 to 18 inches of floor at the walls.
Runners on each side. Two runners beside the bed give soft landings without covering the whole floor, which suits small rooms and beds on platforms.

Bedrooms see less traffic than living rooms, so this is the place for a softer, deeper pile or a wool and silk rug with a sheen. Muted transitional rugs keep a calm mood; a Moroccan-style rug adds texture in a modern room. A round rug at the foot or side of the bed softens a room full of straight lines.
Pick one color from the bedding or curtains and find it in the rug's border or accents. A rug a shade or two darker than the bedding keeps the room from feeling washed out. Our room color guide has more pairing ideas.
